I have seen alot of stanced cars around my area. (obviously) But i notice more and more they have a roof rack... and more often than not it winds up being Yakima. So is there just a greater instance of outdoorsy types liking stanced cars or is this part of the style....if so...why and why?

trying to compensate for lack of other functionality. that car has a correct alignment. not too bad

I think its for bikes and the like. A lot of the stanced types are also the type for BMXing, Drift trikes and whatever else the youths are into nowadays.

I'm outdoorsy. I have a roof rack. I do not have a stanced car. Ground clearance yo.

100% about style. That's been a JDM/stance thing for quite some time now. Never meet a guy with a stanced car who actually does or could use his car for anything related to a roof rack.

It's just the angle, the camber appears to be standard.

I like stance when it's done right, however, the roof rack thing is a trend right now, and I don't really get it.

The worst part? The Japanese are beginning to add roof racks to their stance cars for the purpose of being "USDM."

It's just a style. Along with the window visors. and the roll call stickers. and the tow hook. As a person with a stanced car, it is a style, and some can pull it off making it look amazing, while others....not so much.

Stance is partially an offshoot of the old VW super low craze, and most of those old cars (we're talking about 80s and 90s) had roof racks. Roof racks came out of the craze in old VW circles of accessorizing the shit out of their cars, the more OEM and rare the accessory, the better. The guys slamming the old bugs were kind of doing it as a way to reject the classic stock only or restomod styles, but they kept this emphasis on accessorizing. For a while, the coolest bugs were slammed but otherwise (obsessively) stock machines.

I am 27 going on 53. I am probably as old fashioned as it gets being born after 1980.

I have wondered the same thing.

What I surmised is this: there is a desirability (and, I would argue, a natural beauty) in functionality and capability. Racks make the car look versatile, and versatile is cool. Therefore they get put on more cars than actually necessary, simply for their looks. People that are into stance tend to care more about appearance than anything, hence their willingness to put needless racks on their car just because they think it looks cool.

I think it is the same reason that you see so many lifted SUVs and trucks.

At least this guy took it all the way and actually mounted a bike rail on it.

Just had this conversation with a buddy of mine who was thinking about going back to normal height. And here I am wondering if putting the OEM air dam back on will impede my driving experience.

See, this is the reason why it seemed odd.. cuz if you were outdoorsy or even fake outdoorsy you would have something like a Nissan Juke or a Subie or mitsu or something like that with...you said it... ground clearance.

Yeah, that is one of the things that is weird about combining stance with racks. I guess not everyone that needs to transport bikes is necessarily going off-road, but racks do seem to be more focused on outdoorsy type stuff, which you tend to need ground clearance for.

Full disclosure, though: I have a (non-stanced, but also not exactly high-ground clearance) GTI that I put a Yakima rack on, and would take to mountain bike races. I eventually got sick of dragging the bottom of it across rocks on shitty roads, though, which is why I added a Land Cruiser to my fleet, which now takes over the mountain biking transportation duties. I took the rack off of the GTI once I got the Land Cruiser too...

But why is it a style? I've seen the sort of car he's talking about (most recently a white 2-door BMW E30) and the racks never have anything on them.

That makes sense tho since you still have the car above 3 inches tall. I am an avid cyclist and make my car buying decisions around what I can fit my car in the back of...(sorry FRS/BRZ) I really do not like using bike racks. The total cost of my bicycles that I would carry exceeds the price of my hatchback by a couple thousand dollars and risking them out on the open road or flying them through the air above my car is terrifying. Also I live in a city where expensive racks are often stripped off of cars usually causing damage to the car and rack.

I guess they think its cool. Probably saw it on some forum and thought.. hey that looks pretty cool, I want that! While some people have use for it, some people like it because other people are doing it, or I guess its a fad, just like stickerbombing.

One of my employees is into the stanced Honda scene here in Southern California and he tells me the rack is so that cops are less likely to pull you over as it makes the car less "ricey", make of that what you will.

That is a really interesting statement. its a disguise.... I'm really intrigued by that response. You should interview him and get an in depth idea of what his scene is all about.

Will do, all he ever talks about anyway are how every car NEEDS a turbo and that any car without one is a pos. He also is in love with the GT-r and all Hondas in general. Ill speak to him and get back to you.

I agree with many here that it's a style. Most people never use them. I met a guy once that had a roof rack on his very low Abarth, and I was surprised to learn that he actually uses it for his bikes all the time. He even had extra spots for his friend's bikes!

It's annoying. I have a roof rack (yakima) that is on my car 98% of the year. I use it for Snowboards, Surfboards, Mountain bikes, Kayaks, and whatever else I need to strap to the roof. My car is not "stanced"

I just don't get why i keep seeing vw's and such with spray painted yakima fairings with pink/neon stickers all over. 99% of the time they have no attachments... aka no purpose.

I like the way the racks look on my car. and I use them. Annoying that it's becoming a "scene" thing.
